L'histoire :

A Stockton, Californie, Billy Tully, ancien boxeur de talent divorcé, décide de recommencer à s’entraîner. Il rencontre par hasard, dans une salle de gym, le jeune Ernie Munger. Convaincu de ses capacités, Tully lui conseille de rencontrer son ancien entraîneur, Ruben. Tandis que Ernie livre de difficiles premiers matchs, Billy, qui travaille comme ouvrier agricole, rencontre Oma (Susan Tyrell), un pilier de bar dont le compagnon est en prison. L’alcool, la nostalgie et l’amertume ne tarderont pas à rattraper Billy…

Critique :
Avec tendresse, John Huston filme des combats dérisoires, que sa caméra rend, brusquement, boulversants. Il filme, aussi, ces journaliers qui s'échinent pour un salaire de misère. Ce type qui pisse du sang avant de livrer combat. Cette poivrote qui tangue de bars en hommes (Susan Tyrrell, aussi émouvante que Piper Laurie) dans L'Arnaqueur, de Robert Rossen). C'est l'un des plus beaux films de John Huston et l'un des plus méconnus. Splendide et simple, à l'image de cette scène où les deux boxeurs se retrouvent derrière le comptoir d'un bar. Terrifiés par la vie. Terrifiants de solitude.

Un superbe film sur la boxe où Huston parle de ce qu'il connaît, ayant lui-même pratiqué ce sport. L'opposition entre le vieux Billy, et le jeune, Ernie, qui s'enlise dans le mariage et les combats d'ouverture, donne au film toute sa force et son pouvoir émotionnel.
